Bay to Birdwood to go big for 40th Anniversary
Over the past 40 years, the success of the Bay to Birdwood led to the event being split into two biennial categories in 2001: the first for vehicles manufactured before 1956; and the second for vehicles manufactured from 1956 to 1986.
However, this year’s 40th Anniversary Bay to Birdwood (B2B), to be held on Sunday, 27 September, will be fully inclusive, with vehicles manufactured up to 31 December, 1989, eligible to enter.
The same 1,750 entry cap as in past years will apply, but split across four categories:
- Antique, veteran, vintage and post-war vintage vehicles – approx. 800 places
- Vehicles manufactured between 1956 and 1980 – approx. 800 places
- Vehicles manufactured between 1981 and 1989 – approx. 100 places
- Special interest vehicles from all eras – approx. 50 places
The inclusion of newer vehicles this year – a Bay to Birdwood first - aims to celebrate all decades of historic motoring. Of course, the B2B is also open to motorcycles, light commercials and trucks that fit the age limitation categories, as well as cars.
Entries for this year’s 40th Anniversary B2B opened in January, and at time of writing, the post-1950 vehicle allocation was full, with spaces in the pre-1950 and modern classic allocation filling fast.
To enter your vehicle, go to the B2B website -http://baytobirdwood.com.au/ – for availability updates, entry details and full terms and conditions.
From the traditional start point at Barratt Reserve, West Beach, the 2020 Bay to Birdwood will skirt the Adelaide CBD and pass through Tea Tree Gully, Inglewood, Chain of Ponds and Gumeracha en route to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood, covering around 55km.
The full route will be announced closer to the 27 September event, and as in past B2Bs, there will be an alternate start point (most likely at Modbury) for older and slower vehicles that cuts the overall route length to around 30km.
This year’s event will also see separate Concours d’Elegance and Preservation awards for pre-1950 and post-1950 vehicles held at the National Motor Museum.
