Chryslers By the Bay, Geelong 2008
While the Chrysler marque may be considered minor compared to Ford and Holden, this show, run by the Bay City Chrysler Car Club, continues to grow each year, and like its parent brand, Chrysler Australia, is on a roll. Held in one of Australia's most prestigious and beautiful locations, more than 600 Chryslers assembled on the hallowed grounds of Geelong Grammar School, overlooking Corio Bay. Anything 'Mopar' was welcome, with the oldest vehicle on display an immaculately restored 1929 Dodge Six sedan. There was plenty of American muscle with a number of Plymouths, including a spectacular Road Runner, plus Dodge Challengers and Coronets.
Perhaps my personal favourite was a 1948 Dodge convertible coupe. Featuring 'Fluid Drive' transmission, clock and push button radio, beautiful chrome grille, this car had plenty of brash 'Happy Days' Americana about it. Closer to home, there were numerous examples of Valiants, Chrysler's Charger and one charming AP Valiant with period caravan in tow, a trend that seems to be growing around the country. Chrysler Australia is getting behind the event and had a full complement of its car and off road range on show. All proceeds from the day went to local charity, Cottage by the Sea. A top effort by the organising committee, and one that is sure to be even bigger and better next year.
