Classic Porsches added to Shannons’ timed online auction
With COVID-19 social distancing requiring a revised approach to car auctions, Shannons have chosen to combine their upcoming Melbourne and Sydney auctions into one online-only timed auction event – the Shannons Online Classic Auction - featuring close to 100 lots, including memorabilia and heritage number plates.
Using their already popular online bidding system, Shannons will make this the sole means of bidding on each lot. Under the timed system, bidding will open on 20 May and run for two weeks, closing on 3 June.
All vehicle lots consigned so far have the usual history and set of static images provided for viewing, but each car lot will now also add a walkaround video to enable bidders to study the vehicle in detail.
For more specific information on individual lots, Shannons auction advisers can provide a virtual video tour of the lot and answer questions in real time.
Of the 47 vehicles consigned so far, there are three outstanding air-cooled Porsches – a 1956 356A coupe, 1977 930 Turbo coupe and 1996 911 (993) Targa.
1956 356A coupe
This restored T-1 model 356A coupe has also been mechanically enhanced, with its original 1600cc engine enlarged to 1720cc and fitted with fuel injection in place of carburettors.
Another deviation from standard is the Porsche racing-type gear lever, activating a West Engineering short-shift gearshift mechanism.
Finished in period-correct Aqua Marine Blue, the 356’s body and trims are in excellent condition, while a set of polished Rudge-style knock-off wheels and nose-mounted amber driving lights add the finishing touch.
Inside, the thorough restoration included retrimming the door cards and Speedster model bucket seats in burgundy-red leather and replacing the cream square weave carpets.
Built to drive, this 356 comes with import papers and a copy of an original ‘driver’s manual’. Shannons expect it to sell in the $170,000 - $190,000 range.
1977 930 Turbo coupe
An Australian-market 911 Turbo is relatively rare and this example is believed to have had only three local owners from new.
Previously registered in Western Australia, this 930 Turbo is finished in factory-original Oak Green metallic paint, with Tan leather trim and tartan cloth seat inserts.
Since the turbocharged and intercooled 3-litre ‘boxer’ six-cylinder engine was stripped, checked, upgraded and reassembled at 138,590km, it’s covered an additional 56,410km.
Those upgrades included a new K27 turbocharger, a clutch, front brake calipers and a number of other components, ensuring this Porsche is mechanically in good order despite its age.
The car comes to auction with a folder of receipts, a maintenance schedule and its re-issued owner’s manual.
Shannons have placed a conservative $140,000 to $170,000 pre-auction estimate.
1996 911 Targa
One of the last air-cooled 911 Targas, this rare 1996 example of the 993-era 911 is one of only 25 to make its way to Australia as a new vehicle.
Finished in Polar Silver with Midnight Blue partial leather upholstery and equipped with the optional Tiptronic adaptive automatic transmission, the Targa is distinguished from regular 993 coupes by its large, electrically-operated sliding glass roof.
Delivered new in Perth, this 911 Targa subsequently made its way to Sydney, where it is now in the hands of its third owner and showing just 148,334km on the odometer.
According to Shannons, the car remains in lovely original condition. This, combined with its rarity in Australia, has seen it given a $70,000-$90,000 pre-auction estimate.
