F1 icons at Ballarat Festival of Motoring
The two cars are the Brabham BT19 of Sir Jack Brabham and the Williams FW07 of 1980's World Champion, Alan Jones. To date, Brabham and Jones remain the only Australian drivers to have won the World Formula 1 championship.
Both of these world champion drivers were known for their determination and toughness on the track and the festival organizers have achieved a world first in having their two cars on display together.
Brabham won his earlier world titles in Cooper cars, in 1959 and 1960. He then formed his own company together with Ron Tauranac, and using an engine developed by Repco, built the only Formula 1 car to be driven to a world championship by its constructor.
Jones drove the highly successful Williams, which made good use of "ground effects". This design, which featured moving side skirts to change air flow under the car and draw it closer to the ground, gave much inproved tyre grip. The ground effects cars were very difficult to drive and it took the rugged determination of Jones to take it to victory.
These famous cars will be on display at the Ballarat airfield on Saturday and Sunday September 1 and 2. They will be complemented by a major display of historic racing and sports cars, as well as a "show and shine" display in which the public can enter their cars.
On Sunday there will be a full day of track action at the old Ballarat airfield race track which hosted important race meetings from the late 1940s through to 1961. A large field of historic racers will contest sprints and events on a full three kilometre CAMS-approved track. It will be a great day out for Dad and the whole family.
