Fire Fightin’ McLaren 650S – WIN THIS CAR
Understandably, the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the nation’s focus, but it’s also led to the bushfires that ravaged parts of the country over summer being almost eliminated from public attention.
Fortunately, there are plenty of Aussies who still care about supporting bushfire-affected communities, as well as our Firies. One NSW-based group, the Muragadi Heritage Indigenous Corporation, have decided to support the state’s Rural Fire Service in a unique way.
To raise much-needed funds for the Baulkham Hills Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade, the Muragadi Heritage Indigenous Corporation are raffling a McLaren 650S.
Spider Supercar
The car on offer is an Australian-delivered example - in convertible ‘Spider’ form - that was locally complied in 2016.
Powered by McLaren’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 478kW at 7250rpm and 678Nm at 6000rpm, the 650S Spider drives the rear wheels through a 7-speed DCT auto. On this particular car, a McLaren sports exhaust has been added for a more pleasing note.
Despite a 40kg weight premium over the 650S Coupe, the 650S Spider is actually a close match for its fixed-roof sibling in the usual performance measures, as the car’s carbon fibre ‘MonoCell’ structure was originally developed for both convertible and coupe use.
As well as the same engine output, the 650S Spider matches the Coupe’s 3.0-second 0-100km/h time, while its 329km/h top speed is only 4km/h down on the Coupe.
Performance can be adjusted with four powertrain modes to suit different conditions and there’s active aerodynamic elements, too, including an ‘airbrake’ rear wing.
Suspension on the 650S Spider includes an air-lift function and ProActive Chassis Control that links the front and rear dampers to limit body roll when cornering, while three selectable chassis modes adjust overall suspension performance to suit different road surfaces and driving conditions.
Like the engine, transmission and carbon fibre body, much of the 650S Spider’s suspension componentry is derived from the MP4-12C, but upgraded and improved in key areas.
The Spider rolls on McLaren’s ‘diamond spoke’ alloys - 8.5 x 19-inch at the front and 11.0 x 20-inch at the rear - shod with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres, which in this instance have been branded with ‘McLaren’ and ‘650S’ identification.
Ventilated carbon ceramic disc brakes (394mm front and 380mm rear) were common on most Australian-delivered models, while ABS, ESC, traction control and launch control were all standard.
The 650S Spider’s roof is a 3-piece retractable hardtop, which like the body’s monocell, is constructed from carbon fibre.
Inside the cabin, there’s carbon fibre interior trim and carbon fibre race seats, which in the raffle car have been trimmed in leather (an upgrade on the standard Alcantara trim) and are also heated.
$410K payout for a $25 investment
Valued at $410,000 by the raffle organisers, this 650S Spider has covered only 30,000kms from new and comes with full McLaren Sydney service history.
If that chrome green exterior is not to your liking, have no fear - it’s a vinyl wrap that can be removed to expose the factory Pearl White paint underneath.
Previously used for charity events, including kid’s rides supporting Ronald McDonald House, this 650S Spider is now being raffled to raise funds for the Baulkham Hills Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade (NSW).
