Ford adds Hi-Po engine to EcoBoost Mustang for 2020
The current EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-litre four Mustang produces 224kW and 441Nm. The High Performance 2.3L produces 236kW and 448Nm – the highest output yet from a roadgoing four-cylinder Mustang.
The extra grunt comes from the utilisation of a larger 63mm twin-scroll turbocharger (as used in the Focus RS) that delivers 90 per cent of peak power from 2,500 to 5,300rpm as well as a broader torque curve. Gear ratios, in both the six-speed manual and ten-speed automatic, have been adjusted to suit, with a 3.55:1 final drive ratio on the manual (up from 3.31:1).
Thicker stabiliser bars feature front and rear, and MagneRide suspension is available as an option, while the aluminium alloy engine block and high-performance head result in an improved 53/47 front/rear weight distribution.
Nineteen-inch alloy wheels remain for the High Performance 2.3L, but the rears are now 9.5-inch instead of 9.0-inch for more traction.
Style upgrades include a model-specific grille, the front splitter off the GT, contrast colour mirror caps and bonnet spears, old-school tri-bar badging, a spun aluminium instrument panel (with turbo boost and oil pressure gauges) and a serialized dash plaque. Leather-trimmed Recaro sears are optional and the MY20 High Performance 2.3L Mustang will be available in the same range of new colours as the GT version.
While the Mustang GT will be available from November, the High Performance 2.3L isn’t due for an Australian release until February, 2020.
