Ford commits to hybrid Mustang by 2020
The hybrid Mustang will come on line with hybrid versions of Ford's F-150 pickup and Transit van, as well as an all-electric SUV and electrified police vehicles, all of which are expected to be released by 2020.
The Mustang hybrid is one of 13 electrified vehicles Ford aims to release in the next five years as part of a US$4.5 billion investment in electric engine and autonomous vehicle technology.
"As more and more consumers around the world become interested in electrified vehicles, Ford is committed to being a leader in providing consumers with a broad range of electrified vehicles, services and solutions that make people's lives better," said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO.
How the hybrid Mustang will work has yet to be revealed, but the electric motor is expected to be combined with the already available EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
This combination, according to Ford, will offer power in excess of that produced by the V8-engined Mustang, as well as more low-end torque.
Ford is currently the top American-made plug-in hybrid brand in its home market and second overall in U.S. electric vehicle sales.
Following testing of their new generation of EV technology, which gets underway this year, Ford will release the hybrid Mustang to the North American market in 2020, with other markets, including Australia, expected to follow.
