Gen3 Mustang GT Supercar revealed
Ford used this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 to unveil the first race-ready, seventh-generation Mustang GT for Supercars’ ‘Gen3’ era, ahead of its racing debut in next year’s Australian Supercars Championship.
“We’re very proud to be showing the world our new Mustang Supercar, and what better place to do it than at Mount Panorama,” said Andrew Birkic, president and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.
Built by Ford’s homologation team, Dick Johnson Racing, in conjunction with Ford Performance, the Gen3 Mustang GT Supercar, with its low roofline and long bonnet, more closely resembles its road-going seventh-generation counterpart than the current Mustang Supercar.
Fittingly, Dick Johnson drove the first laps in the Gen3 Mustang GT around Mount Panorama, joined by Greg Murphy in the Gen3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that will replace the Holden ZB Commodore next season.
In addition to Dick Johnson Racing, Ford-supported teams that will race the new Gen3 Mustang GT Supercar in 2023 include Tickford Racing, Grove Racing, Blanchard Racing Team and Walkinshaw Andretti United. The latter are newcomers to Ford, making the switch for next year after decades with Holden.
“Mustang has been an iconic brand on and off the track for 58 years and its legend will continue around the world,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports.
“We always say Mustang was born to race, and that is more true today than ever. The Mustang GT Supercar is ready to race in 2023.”
While the Gen3 Mustang GT Supercar will make its debut next March, the roadgoing version of the seventh-generation Mustang won't arrive in Australia until later in 2023.
