Jack Doohan secures full-time Formula 1 drive with Alpine
Australia will continue to have two drivers in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship in 2025, with Jack Doohan promoted to a full-time seat with the BWT Alpine F1 Team. Alpine’s reserve driver for the past two years, 21-year-old Doohan is the first graduate of the ‘Alpine Academy’ to land a permanent spot on the grid in Formula 1.
The son of five-time 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix Word Champion Mick Doohan, Jack replaces Esteban Ocon at BWT Alpine F1 and will join incumbent driver Pierre Gasly, who re-signed with the team in June. BWT Alpine F1 says the combination of youth and experience in their 2025 pairing is “geared towards building a successful future”.
“I am so happy to secure promotion into a full-time race seat in 2025 with BWT Alpine F1 Team,” Doohan said. “I am very grateful for the trust and belief by the team’s senior management.
“There is so much work ahead to be prepared and ready, and I will give my best in the meantime to absorb as much information and knowledge to be ready for the step up.
“It’s exceptionally satisfying to be the first graduate of the Alpine Academy to be in a race seat with the team and I’m extremely thankful to those who supported me along the way to make this a reality.
“It's an exciting moment, a proud day for my family, and I look forward to taking it all in and pushing hard behind the scenes.”
Doohan’s path to F1, like that of most of his contemporaries, started in karting, before he stepped up to open wheelers. In the junior formulae, highlights included finishing runner-up in the 2021 Formula 3 World Championship (four wins, seven podiums) and third in the 2023 Formula 2 World Championship (six wins, five podiums). In the 2023 season, he balanced F2 commitments with his testing role at BWT Alpine F1 before becoming the team’s full-time reserve driver this year.
Doohan will continue as reserve driver for the remainder of 2024, which includes TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) work in the Alpine A522 and duties in the team’s simulator on selected race weekends.
