Mazda adds ‘RS’ to MX-5 range
“Australia has a proud history of localised MX-5 variants, including the turbocharged NB-series MX-5 SP,” said Mazda Australia’s Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi.
“These new MX-5 GT RS variants offer more focused dynamics with upgraded suspension and braking systems that provide greater feedback, control and performance.”
Available on both the 2.0-litre GT roadster and 2.0-litre GT RF, but only with a six-speed manual transmission, the RS is aimed at the enthusiast driver, but doesn’t compromise everyday usability, according to Mazda.
RS specification starts with fitment of Bilstein dampers and a strut tower brace, along with 17-inch BBS alloys that are specific to this variant. These lightweight wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza S001 205/45/R17 tyres.
The other key feature is a Brembo brake package on the front wheels, made up of four-piston aluminium calipers on 280mm x 22m ventilated discs with ‘pillar’ internal cooling fins.
High-performance brake pads improve fade resistance by a claimed 26 per cent, while the combined braking package is lighter by 2kg.
Finally, identifying black mirror caps are an aesthetic touch that has also been applied to all Mazda MX-5 variants for 2021.
The GT RS arrives as the premium-priced variant in the MX-5 roadster lineup at $47,020, with the RF version priced at $51,100 - only $20 shy of the $51,120 RF GT Black Roof automatic (list pricing, excluding ORCs).
Upgrades across the MX-5 range for 2021 include Wireless Apple CarPlay as standard, supporting the existing wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
A new paint option is Deep Crystal Blue, while inside, Pure White nappa leather upholstery is optional on the range topping RF GT Black Roof model.
