Moffat supports Dementia Australia
Allan Moffat OBE has joined Sir Jackie Stewart OBE as a Dementia Australia Ambassador.
The four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and four-time Bathurst 500/1000 winner, who spoke of his own Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis for the first time in September, 2019, said he was honoured to be officially appointed as a Dementia Australia Ambassador.
“By speaking up about my experience with Alzheimer’s disease, I can encourage others to seek support and know that they are not alone if they have concerns about themselves or a loved one,” Moffat said.
Former racing rivals Larry Perkins and Fred Gibson now play a key role alongside Allan’s son Andrew and long-time manager and friend, Phil Grant in supporting the touring car racing legend.
“With my mates there to support me I am able to continue to experience my life to the full and can still make regular public appearances and meet my fans – something that I truly value,” Moffat added.
Three-time Formula 1 Word Champion Stewart founded global charity ‘Race Against Dementia’ in 2018 after his wife Helen was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2014.
“Helen’s condition has had a devastating impact on my family, as it does for millions of families living with dementia around the world,” Sir Jackie said.
“I am very proud to be taking on this role as an Honorary International Dementia Australia Ambassador and hope to continue to raise awareness and increase research into prevention and cure for dementia.”
Unfortunately, the coronavirus outbreak that led to the cancellation of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix also impacted the official welcoming for the pair as Dementia Australia Ambassadors and related charity fundraising initiatives.
With an estimated 459,000 Australians living with dementia, further investment into dementia research is essential. To make a donation to Race Against Dementia, go to https://www.raceagainstdementia.com/
