Mustangs take first wins of 2024 Supercars season
After Chevrolet drivers won the first eight races of this year’s Repco Supercars Championship, Ford hit back at the Parth SuperSprint in May. Victory in Race 9 went to Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert, while Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters won Race 10 following a time penalty for Mostert.
Prior to Perth, Camaro drivers had dominated the podium, but the Fords came out strongly at Wanneroo, with Mostert on pole for Saturday’s Race 9 alongside his team mate Ryan Wood, while Waters secured pole for Sunday’s Race 10, ahead of Mostert and Triple 8’s Will Brown.
In Race 9, Mostert was jumped off the line by Wood, but patience and trusting a bold strategy call ultimately paid off, with the two-time Bathurst 1000 winner victorious ahead of Brown and Waters. The win was the first for Mostert since 2022 and Walkinshaw Andretti United’s first since switching from Holden to Ford for Gen3 in 2023.
"I've wanted this one for quite some time," a relieved Mostert said post-race. "It's very special to do it here in Perth, special to do it for the team at Walkinshaw Andretti United, first one for Ford with the team, first one for the year for Ford as well which is pretty exciting.”
In Race 10, Waters led the field away but was overtaken by Mostert on lap 6. However, following an unsafe pit stop release, Mostert was hit with a 5 second time penalty, meaning he had to maximise his advantage out front to try and erase the deficit. With Waters closing, Mostert crossed the line first, but the gap wasn’t big enough and the WAU driver was relegated to second.
“It's awesome to get a few trophies this weekend and get the win,” said Waters, who claimed his first victory since Adelaide last November.
“We had a really fast car at the end when it was lighter and managed to close the gap on Chazzy."
At the end of the Perth round, Mostert and Waters were sitting in third and fourth respectively in the drivers’ championship behind Triple 8’s Will Brown and Broc Feeney.
