National Corvette Museum sinkhole - last car recovered
On April 10, news came through that the last of the eight Corvettes that had fallen into the hole - a 2001 Z06 with Mallett Hammer conversion - had been pulled out of the sinkhole, albeit in a couple of pieces, on April 9.
The Mallett Z06 conversion, which had only been donated to the museum in December, was believed to be one of the first to fall into the sinkhole, and thus was the most severely damaged, buried under untold quantities of rubble and dirt, as well as some of the other Corvettes.
When extracted from the sinkhole, the level of damage incurred to this particular Corvette became apparent, to the point where, aside from the wheels, it's barely recognisable as a car, let alone a Corvette.
As the damage to this particular Corvette is so extensive, it's unknown how much, if anything can be salvaged off it for the restoration that General Motors have agreed to fund. Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, is leading the restoration effort for all eight cars.
