New look MX-5 on the way

The new iteration of the MX-5 was revealed in Japan in July, and features not only a new look inside and out, but improved driving attributes as well.

Chief amongst the appearance changes is a new front bumper design that not only looks aggressive, but is reported to contribute to optimal aerodynamic performance, too. A larger front grille opening, newly designed front fog lamp bezel and new front chin spoiler complete the new look to the front end.

Japanese market models get a new exterior colour, Dolphin Grey mica, replacing Metropolitan Grey. Australian delivery of this colour (we currently get Metropolitan Grey as part of six colour options) is unconfirmed.

Inside, the decoration panel, steering wheel bezel and instrument meter rings now come in a glossy dark grey replacing the current silver colour. JDM models get two-tone tan leather and black alcantara seats, with the option of black leather, while Aus-delivered models are currently only available in black leather.

The MX-5 has always been a driver's car, and the upgraded model stays that way thanks to revisions to the throttle management and braking.

In manual transmission-equipped models, adjustment to the throttle management programme improves responsiveness when accelerating out of corners, while updates to the brake booster make it easier to control the front and rear load distribution - improving braking ability all round.

A safety feature of note is a new 'Active Bonnet' that raises the trailing edge of the bonnet that creates an impact-absorbing space between the engine and the bonnet, as well as reducing pedestrian injury in an accident.

Mazda Australia's national marketing manager, Alastair Doak, said: "The MX-5 is an iconic car that just got better. The MX-5 is the world's best-selling two-seater roadster and these latest design and dynamic upgrades should see it remain firmly on the shopping lists of buyers looking for fun, open-top driving."

Japanese buyers have the option of the MX-5 with a power retractable hardtop (RHT), or more traditional folding soft top, but Australian-delivered models are expected to be the RHT version only.

The new look MX-5 is available for order now from Mazda dealers nationally. Pricing and exact delivery dates are yet to be confirmed, but expect the new look MX-5 to be around the $51,500 + ORCs mark of the current model.
