New Mazda MX-5 pricing announced
The new 'ND' series MX-5 will start at $31,990 (plus on road costs) for the standard roadster. This is more than $15,000 less than the preceding model, which started at $47,280.
With the first generation 'NA' model from 1989 priced from $29,990¹ (the equivalent of $59,433² in today's money), Mazda says the list pricing for the new model makes it the best-value MX-5 ever.
Mazda also notes that the Gen 1 'NA' model didn't have features like Bluetooth, power steering, air conditioning, ABS braking, Traction Control, Cruise Control or SBS airbags, all of which are standard features on the new MX-5.
Sitting above the standard MX-5 will be a GT version, the local list pricing for which is expected to be revealed closer to launch, but will likely carry a premium over the entry-level version. Exactly what separates the GT from the entry-level MX-5 in terms of spec and equipment levels will also be revealed closer to launch.
Mazda Australia has advised they've already received around 16,000 expressions of interest locally on the new MX-5, which combined with the new, lower pricing, should see the ND MX-5 perform well here.
Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders said: "For those that know, love or own an MX-5, the arrival of an all-new model is always cause for excitement.
We believe that the sharp entry pricing for the new ND will inspire a new generation of younger MX-5 buyers to experience the freedom and enjoyment of open-top motoring. The All-New Mazda MX-5 is in many ways the rebirth of an icon."
Production of Australian market units is already underway, with both the entry-level MX-5 roadster and top-spec MX-5 roadster GT destined for the local market from mid-August. Both will be available in Australia with a specially tuned 1.5 litre SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 96kW of power and 150Nm of torque. Transmission will be a choice of either the SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic; the latter likely to add around $2,000 to the list price.
Despite initial reports saying Australia would miss out on the 116kW/200Nm 2.0-litre engine version that will be offered in the North American market, Mazda Australia says this more powerful MX-5 will be offered locally later in the year.
With the 1.5 engine, the new MX-5 weighs from 1,009kg, a reduction of 91kg over the outgoing 2.0-litre car and close to the 950kg weight of the original NA version.
The ND is also the shortest MX-5 ever built, measuring 3,915mm long, 1,730mm wide and 1,235mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,315mm, and front and rear overhang reduced to 760mm and 840mm, respectively.
