Porsches added to Shannons Winter Timed Online Auction
Earlier this year, coronavirus-induced social distancing and public gathering limits forced Shannons to switch to auctions without on-site bidding. The response to the first ‘timed online auction,’ held from 20 May to 3 June, showed that the classic car community will not be stopped by COVID-19. A 97 per cent clearance rate from that auction, which included cars, motorcycles, memorabilia, gargaenalia and heritage number plates, made another online-only auction a natural decision.
That second timed online auction has been confirmed for 19 to 26 August.
Shannons ‘2020 Winter Timed Online Auction’ has 149 lots consigned, split across Melbourne and Sydney and covering a broad range of vehicles. Car consignments cover Aussie, American and European vehicles, with the Euro lots including six Porsches.
Leading the Porsche brigade is a 1972 911E 2.4 that comes to auction from a 99-year-old owner who’s only the car’s second custodian.
One of just 1,124 911E Coupes built in 1972, the car was delivered new to the UK. It was also highly-optioned from the factory, with special order Gemini Blue metallic paint, Light Tan trim with matching Perlcord cloth inserts, an electric sunroof, electric windows, tinted glass all round, a rear window wiper, 15-inch Fuchs forged wheels, impact absorbing bumpers front and rear, wheel arch trims, an 18mm rear anti-roll bar and the desirable Porsche ‘Type 915’ five-speed manual transmission that was an option on 2.4E models delivered in Australia.
Purchased by the current owner in 1975, the Porsche has been well cared-for since, thanks to careful storage over the past 30 years, including time spent on blocks and being started intermittently.
The car comes to auction in what Shannons calls wonderful, largely untouched condition. Mostly unrestored and unmodified, the car’s paintwork is described as in gleaming condition save for some minor blemishes, while interior trim remains in exceptional condition.
With its tool kit, spare keys, original owner’s manual and service books (in the original factory wallet) included, the ’72 911E is described as one of the best and most original early 911s in Australia.
Pre-auction estimate for this car is $150,000-$180,000.
Other Porsches listed in the upcoming auction include an Australian-delivered 1976 911 Turbo 3.0 ($220,000-$250,000 estimate), a 1979 911SC Targa ($54,000-$62,000 estimate), a 1989 944 Turbo ($50,000-$60,000), a 1985 928S ($45,000-$55,000 estimate) and a 1994 968 Clubsport ($85,000-$100,000).
Shannons Sydney showroom is open to view consignments under social distancing restrictions and reduced hours, but the Melbourne showroom is closed to all visitors due to the Stage 4 lockdown.
