Searching for the 'Goblin'
An interesting, hand-made special, the 'Goblin' was built in Perth in 1959 by Graeme Farrell.
Based on a 1928 Essex chassis, the Goblin used mechanical parts from a wrecked Holden 48-215 (FX). The 2.2-litre six-cylinder 'grey motor' Farrell fitted to this creation featured a high-compression head with triple carbs, Vauxhall pistons, Chevrolet valves and Standard Vanguard valve springs. The 48-215 also supplied the manual gearbox and diff for the project.
The MGA-style body is all steel, supposedly built with panels from the wrecked Holden. An FJ front grille, headlights and bumper have been well incorporated into the design, with genuine knock-on MG wire wheels adding to the Goblin's sports car appearance.
Overall, the Goblin is a lot more attractive than the name suggests, with good proportions and what appears from the photos to be a high standard of finish.
Graeme's son, Wayne, is trying to track the car down, if it still exists. Unfortunately, little of the car's history is known, other than its early years were spent in Perth, Farrell's home town.
Wayne believes his father built the car as a 'streeter' and didn't take part in any racing events or hillclimbs, but there is a rumour that a subsequent owner may have modified it and raced it in Perth.
If you remember this car cruising around Perth - or on a racetrack - back in the day, and more importantly, if you know where it is now, Wayne would love to hear from you. Call 0413 157 415, or email: [email protected] with any leads.
