Sunbeam Tiger top seller at Shannons Autumn Melbourne Auction
Running the gamut from a 1910 Ford Model T Tourer to a 2007 Elfin MS8 Clubman, the lots featured Aussie and American muscle, European and British classics, and even commercial vehicles.
Top seller at the auction was a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger, offered with No Reserve, which went for $63,000 after a floor-versus-phone bidding duel. Second best was a 1968 Holden HK Monaro, which while it didn't carry its original engine, still sold well at $54,000. The aforementioned Elfin MS8 roadster (also offered at No Reserve) achieved $44,000, while an exceptional, restored 1973 Bolwell MkVII made $34,000.
Beating out some more luxurious classics that would have been much more expensive when new was a humble 1961 Citroen 2CV, which made $18,000, while a rare, partially-restored 1924 Hudson sold for $19,500. An immaculately restored 1947 Chevrolet tray truck sold above its pre-auction estimate for $25,000, with a rare Ford Prefect ute also overachieving to make $11,500.
The headline cars ahead of this auction - a 1968 Shelby GT500 and 1910 Ford Model T in RHD with Australian history - failed to reach their reserves on the night, but sold afterwards for $140,000 and $52,000, respectively.
