Take this Cadillac and Shove it!
Johnny Paycheck's best - and some might say only - claim to fame was the 1977 hit single "Take this Job and Shove It". But there was more to the country singer's career than that, including a fine taste in cars, as evidenced by the luxuriously-appointed Cadillac limo he originally owned.
On consignment with Auctions America by RM for their Auburn Fall auction in September, the ex-Paycheck Cadillac is a 1970 model Fleetwood 75 limousine. Originally ordered by Paycheck, the Caddy features a passenger compartment fully customized to his tastes, finished in gold velour with matching privacy curtains and gold shag carpeting. Equipped with a power front/rear seat divider as well as a Sony TV, the '70 Caddy also features a refrigerator, jump seats, climate control air conditioning, automatic dimming headlights, a Pioneer tape player and stereo system, and power windows, steering, brakes, locks, and front seat.
Showing only an approximate 67,000 miles, the Cadillac is finished in black with a black padded roof and black chauffeur's compartment. It benefits from a recent cosmetic freshening and features a 472ci V8 engine and automatic transmission.
Paycheck (born Donald Lytle in 1938)started recording songs in the early '60s, but really hit his stride with a switch to a well-cultivated 'outlaw' image in the 1970s. A contemporary of the likes of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, Paycheck had a string of minor hits in the US country charts throughout the'70s.'Take this Job and Shove It' wasn't actually written by Paycheck, but proved to be his biggest hit and an anthem for blue collar Americans. In 1981, it spawned a film of the same name, where Paycheck had a small role.He also guest-starred, as himself,on an episode of'The Dukes of Hazzard'!After a short prison stint in the 1990s and a long battle with drugs and alcohol, Paycheck died in 2003.
The Paycheck Cadillac will be auctioned at the Auctions America by RM 'Auburn Fall' auction this September 1 - 4 in Auburn, Indiana.
