Targa Florio 2006
First run officially in 1906 with a mere ten cars, the Florio grew to become one of motorsport's great challenges, attracting the likes of Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio before becoming a non-professional event in 1974. This year, the event is celebrating its centenary, taking in much of its original competitive route through stunning Sicilian mountain roads and featuring new cars as well as classics and exotics from yesteryear - Ferrari, Mercedes, Porsche, Bugatti, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo and more. With more than 80 cars scheduled to compete over the five day, 1076km course, the Targa Florio 'Grand Centenary' will take place this May 31 to June 4 and motoring holiday specialists Drivetravel are offering Targa Florio Centenary Tour holiday packages for those keen to see the action.
The Drivetravel package covers 7 days and 6 nights following the tour and includes twin share accommodation, coach transfers, traditional Italian meals and a limted edition Targa Florio jacket & cap. A list of former competitors will also be on hand, names like Elford, Larousse and Regazzoni attending selected functions throughout the tour, while respected motorsport veteran and event MC for the Targa Tasmania, Brian Reed, will serve as tour host. Prices start at $6,470 AUD for the basic package of economy airfare, taxes and tour arrangements.
