Targa High Country 2020 postponed
COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria and related border closures and quarantine periods have forced the postponement of the 11th Targa High Country tarmac rally.
In the wake of the cancellation of the 2020 Targa Tasmania, the Victorian event had already had its date adjusted once, pushed back a week to 13-15 November, 2020. Until recently, organisers were hopeful of honouring the new date, but with ongoing uncertainty regarding access to and movement within Victoria, the decision was made to postpone Targa High Country to 5-7 February, 2021.
Organisers stated that, even though Victoria may be re-opened by mid-November, it is clear that most other states will continue to insist on 14 days of quarantining for anyone who visits Victoria from another state, which will hinder a number of people from attending the rally.
Moving the date back a second time – by months, not weeks – will, organisers say, ensure the eleventh running of Targa High Country will be as big as it has been in the recent past, with more than 150 cars competing and another 50 enjoying the Targa Tour experience. The reality of greater confidence coming in 2021, which in turn will hopefully see more competitors able to attend, made the decision to postpone the event an obvious one.
The new date means that early bird entries, which had closed back in August, will be re-opened for a brief period - until midnight this Friday, 9 October, 2020. The date for non-early bird Targa High Country entries has been moved out to 15 January, 2021.
