Toyota 86 hits Aus milestone
The 86 has also been significantly more successful in the Australian market for Toyota than the Supra (2,895 total Australian sales) and the MR2 (3,451 total Australian sales). “The sales success of the Toyota 86 has been impressive, and it is just the start of a new era of excitement for our company,” said Toyota Australia’s VP of Sales & Marketing, Sean Hanley.
Hanley added that the 86 has also helped rejuvenate the Toyota brand by attracting younger customers. That rejuvenation is likely to continue, with the all-new Supra (see JUST CARS #267) to make its return in the near future – possibly even as early as 2019. Arriving in June was a new premium paint option – Apollo Blue – that’s only available on the GTS variants of the 86 fitted with the performance kit.
Available for all 86 variants, the performance kit ($2,200 for GTS, $2,900 for GT) consists of larger Brembo brakes, retuned Sachs suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels (normally 16-inch on all bar GTS variants). When combined with leather-accented seats and a unique black finish for the wheels, exterior mirrors and rear spoiler, the Apollo Blue paint and performance kit option is priced at a combined $2,950.
The Toyota 86 GT is priced from $41,440, with the GTS variant starting at $36,640 (excl. ORCs). A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 152kW and 212Nm when paired with a six-speed manual transmission, is common to both variants. See your Toyota dealer for more details.
