Toyota releases Special Edition 86
Based on the top-grade GTS manual variant and limited to just 60 units for Australia, the Special Edition adds larger Brembo performance brake calipers and larger ventilated brake discs for enhanced stopping power, as well as specially-tuned Sachs performance dampers for improved dynamic stability, custom paint and interior modifications.
The substantially beefier rotors are 326mm x 30mm at the front, with four-piston calipers and larger 75cm2 pads. This compares to the GTS’s normal 294mm x 24mm front rotors and 54cm2 pads. The rear adds 316mm x 20mm rotors with two-piston calipers and 32 cm2 pads, compared to 290mm x 18mm and 30cm2 pads on the stock GTS.
Toyota says the fitment of Sachs dampers adds to the lightweight sports car's responsiveness and stability.
All 60 units of the Special Edition are identified by Solar Orange paint, which is contrasted by a metallic black finish to the rear spoiler and door-mirror housings. Completing the exterior is a set of 10-spoke 17-inch anthracite-coloured alloy wheels.
In the cabin, the leather-accented front sports seats with perforated Alcantara trim feature contrasting orange stitching, as do the steering wheel, gear shift, park brake and door trim. The suede-like Grandlux dashboard features an ‘86’ logo embossed with orange stitchwork.
The limited-edition 86’s driveline is unchanged - a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Maximum output is 152kW at 7,000rpm with 212Nm of torque from 6400 to 6800rpm.
Other standard features include keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, rear spoiler, sat nav and an upgraded multimedia system.
Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the performance package is ideally suited to the 86's balanced chassis, low centre of gravity and its front-engine/rear-wheel-drive configuration.
"Whether driven on the open road or on the track, the combination of beefier brakes and uprated suspension involving two renowned performance brands is designed to further distinguish Toyota's lightweight coupe as an authentic driver's car."
The 86 limited-edition performance package is priced at $41,490 (an increase of $4,550), including the premium paint. See your Toyota dealer for further details.
