Volvo protects pissheads...and the rest of us!
Unfortunately for Aussie drinkers, the limit on the Alcoguard is set at only .02 BAC! Alcoguard utilises fuel-cell technology - the same as that used by most police forces in Europe for BAC breathalysing. Before the Alcoguard-fitted Volvo can be started, the driver must blow into the system's wireless hand-held unit. The driver's breath is analysed in the unit then transmits the results to the car's electronic control system. If the blood-alcohol limit of .02% is exceeded, the engine will not start. Volvo claim that advanced sensors mean the system can't be cheated by using external air sources like pumps. Alcoguard will be available in the US and Europe early in 2008.
