VW releases 70th Anniversary Kombi
Marking 70 years since the “conception” of the original VW Transporter, which evolved into numerous variants, including the much-loved Kombi, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released a limited-edition special – the Multivan ‘Kombi 70’.
(Dutch VW importer Ben Pon first posited the idea of a commercial vehicle derived from the Beetle in April, 1947, but the idea wasn’t approved for development and production at Volkswagen until November, 1948, with the first units going on sale in March, 1950)
Based on the short-wheelbase, diesel-engined, DSG transmission Multivan TDI340 Comfortline variant of the current (T6) generation VW van, the Kombi 70 is available in a choice of four different two-tone colour schemes inspired by the original, including the Candy White/Curcuma Yellow pictured.
Other special touches include 18-inch ‘disc’ alloy wheels, wood-effect flooring, a 3-person rear bench seat, alcantara seat trim throughout and the ‘Good Night’ package, which consists of a Multiflex bed extension, washable bed cover, under-seat storage, fabric blinds and a rechargeable mini torch.
Modern features unheard of when the original Kombi was new include LED headlights and DRLs, power-operated sliding doors and a power latching mechanism.
Australian allocation of the Multivan Kombi 70 will be limited to 120 units, priced at $64,990 drive away, which is a premium of almost $10,000 over the SWB TDI340 Comfortline it’s based on. (NOTE: the standard-spec Multivan TDI340 Comfortline DSG was being offered at a special driveaway price of $52,990 until 31/3/2018).
