Whincup sets new ATCC/V8 Supercar record
While Whincup unofficially won the title at the previous round at Phillip Island, the Homebush result confirmed it. Whincup accrued enough points at the Phillip Island 400 to be unbeatable, and with no major penalties from the final round, the title was his.
"It's all a bit emotional at the moment," Whincup said after winning the second of two races at Phillip Island that secured the championship.
"It is a bit of a fairytale to win the race, and to win the championship. It will be very sweet to hold the trophy after the next event."
After a slow start to his V8 Supercar career, and a sacking from Garry Rogers Motorsport, Whincup's record has been impressive since joining Triple Eight/Red Bull Racing in 2006; 88 race wins (from 342 starts - a 25% win-to-race ratio), 133 podiums, 59 pole positions, four Bathurst victories, as well as driver's titles in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and now, 2014.
In achieving his sixth driver's championship, Whincup goes one better than Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife, who each won five driver's championships in ATCC/V8 Supercar competition. Like Geoghegan, Whincup is the only driver to win championships with different manufacturers (Ford and Holden).
Whincup is also closing on team mate Craig Lowndes's 97 race win record, but needs another six victories at Mount Panorama to eclipse the record of nine Bathurst wins set by Peter Brock.
