Holden's success with the Monaro pushed Chrysler to come up with an answer, and the "Hey Charger" campaign was an instant success. The Charger quickly made up half of Australia's Valiant sales and would see 4 models offered: the base Charger, the mid-range XL, the performance option R/T, and the luxury 770. The 770 came with a range of upgrades including quartz halogen driving lights and bumper overriders, a vinyl covering on the tops of the doors, high-backed reclining seats, woodgrain dash, full carpeting, improved sound insulation, an alloy-spoked steering wheel, and heavier torsion bar suspension with an anti-roll bar as standard to give the car a more "European ride quality". The 265 Hemi inline-six was no slug either, offering performance figures to match competitors' V8s and is now recognised as a true Australian collector's car.
This quite original Valiant VH 770 Charger is factory fitted with the 265ci Hemi inline-six with the Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic transmission, and finished in the classy Russet Metallic paint with a beige interior. Despite the exterior showing some bumps and bruises and some early paint fade, the car presents quite well from all angles and in very original condition. The interior presents impressively for its age with freshly reupholstered front seats and the rear seats looking nearly untouched. Recent work includes a freshly painted engine bay, new dual exhaust with extractors, brakes rebuilt, rims repainted to original colour, new tyres and shock/suspension repairs. This is a rare and great opportunity to secure a true Aussie classic that is turn-key, ready to be enjoyed.
