THE STORY
General Motors' designer Harley Earl is credited with convincing GM to build a two-seater sports car for the American market.
Launched in 1953, the resulting Chevrolet Corvette quickly earned the mantle of “America’s Sport’s Car” and the model is still produced today.
1964 was the second year of the Corvette “Stingray” and second year for the C2 generation of cars.
Subtle changes were made to that year including deleting the faux hood vents, adding more sound insulation, revised transmission mounts and the introduction of the fabled 4 speed Muncie manual transmission.
The 1964 Corvette completed the quarter-mile run in 14.2 seconds at a speed of 161kmph and a 0-100kmph time of just 5.6 seconds.
THE CAR
This gorgeous Riverside Red convertible Corvette Stingray has a 272 kW (365 HP), solid lifter NOM 327ci Chevrolet V8 engine boasting the highest horse-power rating for the non-fuel injected model.
It was imported from the USA and restored in Australia by Classic Motor Studio a couple of years ago.
The engine has solid lifters, large 4-barrel Holley carburettor (specific to the 365 HP model), a special cam and 11.25:1 compression ratio. It is an extremely smooth and powerful unit.
Re-sprayed in factory Riverside Red (Glasurit paint), this car has a contrasting White soft top.
It has a 4-speed close-ratio manual Muncie transmission, posi-traction rear end, power boosted brakes with disc brake front end and 4-wheel independent suspension.
This vehicle has its factory red interior with new seat trims, near new carpet, original working radio, new knock off wheels and near-new white wall tyres.
New chrome bumper bars were fitted all round, as was an alternator. This car has its original jack.
On the road, this Vette is extremely powerful with a great exhaust note. It is a beautiful car that is an absolute blast to drive.
On historic registration in Victoria.
