Chicane Auctions’ October Collector, Performance & Rare Car Auction drew an impressive selection of Aussie and American classics. Muscle was the order of the day in this latest sale from the Melbourne-based auction house, with an XR Falcon Pro Street build and XY Falcon GT replica joined by desirable Toranas and a high-performance Mustang that was the star of the 8-15 October timed online auction.
What made this particular Mustang, a 1969 Mach 1, special was its order sheet, headlined by the R-Code 428ci ‘Super Cobra Jet’ Drag Pack. A step up from the regular Cobra Jet V8, the Super Cobra Jet added heavy-duty internals and an external oil cooler. This Mach 1 was also ordered with a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, Traction-Lok diff, power steering, tinted glass and an eight-track player.
Finished in Acapulco Blue with black vinyl trim, the Marti Report shows this car was delivered new to Hawaii, which explains why the factory heater was deleted. Fully restored in the US before coming to Australia a little over 18 years ago, and with only one local owner, this very appealing Mach 1 sold for $150,500.
Next best was a pair of Toranas, led by a genuine 1973 LJ GTR XU-1. Finished in factory Sable Silver metallic, this car had its black vinyl trim upgraded to leather during a bare-metal restoration in the early 2000s. The 202 six with triple Strombergs was rebuilt, as were the suspension and brakes. Despite some minor damage and an ICAARS report indicating a replacement engine block, this Torana sold well at $117,250.
The other Torana, a 1970 LC GTR XU-1, is believed to be one of the first seven examples built, and was the promotional car for GM-H. Finished in Plum Dinger purple, this XU-1 has been repainted, with some interior trims replaced, too, but remains authentic to original spec. Adding to the appeal was a bunch of signatures from 1970s motorsport luminaries on the glovebox lid. Hammer price was $95,500.
