Seller's Description
THE STORY
Launched in 1967, the Ford Falcon XR GT heralded the dawn of the Australian muscle car. As the first of its kind, the XR GT combined raw power with refined style, becoming an instant classic and a cornerstone of Ford's motorsport legacy.
Visually, the XR GT showcased a muscular yet elegant design, with aggressive styling elements that hinted at its performance capabilities. The wide stance, bold grille, and signature racing stripes emphasized its high-performance nature. Inside, the XR GT offered a driver-focused cockpit, with bucket seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a layout designed for performance enthusiasts.
Under the hood, the XR GT was equipped with the legendary 4.7L (289ci) Windsor V8 engine, sourced from the Ford Mustang. This engine was paired with specially tuned suspension, ensuring an exciting driving experience without compromising on comfort or stability.
On the road, the car was a revelation, providing a thrilling balance of power and handling that set it apart from its competitors. On the track, the XR GT is credited as the first ever ‘Bathurst 500/1000’ won by a V8-powered car. Prior to 1967, the Mount Panorama Circuit had been regarded as too tough for larger V8 vehicles and had remained the domain of smaller cars.
Almost all the original XR GTs were painted in the colour ‘GT Gold’.
The Ford XR GT didn’t just represent a new model; it embodied a new era for performance cars in Australia. Its success on the racetrack and its growing popularity with enthusiasts solidified its place in history as one of the most influential cars of the era. The XR GT remains a symbol of Ford's commitment to performance, engineering excellence, and timeless design.
