Few vehicles stand out on the open road, beach or sand dune quite as openly as the Volkswagen Type 181 – better known as the Volkswagen Thing.
The concept for the Type 181 began in the early 1960’s when several European governments began cooperating on development of the Europa Jeep (a lightweight amphibious vehicle). Development of this new military vehicle proved time consuming however the west German government was in need of a limited number of light duty, durable transport vehicles. Though VW was approached in the 50’s to produce such a vehicle, management declined however as VW was still partially state owned, they were obliged to do so none the less. Helped along with this decision was the fact that Volkswagen’s management saw potential in the civilian market where Mexican customers were asking for something more rugged than the type 1 (a large seller in Mexico at the time) and the popularity of VW dune buggies in the US made executives think that a durable, fun and offroad capable vehicle would be attractive to buyers. By utilizing many off the shelf parts, VW could keep costs down and profitability high.
Similar in concept to the Type 82 Kübelwagen, the type 181 was a high riding rear flat 4 engined all-terrain vehicle in which was a bit of a parts bin special. The floor pan was from a type 1 Karmann Ghia, rear swing axle suspension and reduction gearing from the split screen kombi – later changed in 1973 to double jointed axles and IRS semi-trailing arm setup used on the 1303 and us spec beetles.
Initially it was fitted with a 44hp flat 4 1493cc engine but within the first year of production, this was upgraded to a 1584cc twin port powerplant making 60hp. Both engines were mated to a 4-speed manual box.
The quick folding roof, detachable side windows, fold down windscreen, detachable doors, rear folding seats and a quirky utilitarian styled body added to the charm of the Type 181 so much so that it attracted over 140,000 buyers over its lifetime between 1968 to 1983 (with a vast majority being made in Mexico). Around the world the Type 181 was commonly known as The ‘Thing’, ‘Safari’ and ‘Trekker’.
Vehicle History
This ‘Thing’ stands out on the road in Safari Blue with black ‘Thing’ stickering and bulging all-terrains while the interior stars new black vinyl upholstery, rust effect dashboard (clear coated) and fake grass flooring (no need to mow!).
The VW was restored about 20 years ago, then stored for a long period of time until a few years ago. The current owner re-commissioned the VW including rebuilt brakes, fuel lines, new tires and rebuilt 1600cc engine. Since re-commissioning, the VW has travelled approximately 2000km without issue and comes with a full road worthy certificate.
Overall, the body is straight with no signs of rust while the interior shows in good condition. The original steering wheel was replaced in favour for a smaller sports wheel (though the original comes with the car). The underbody presents in ok condition however does show signs of previous repairs and may need some work in the future.
Weather gear includes the black vinyl soft top and mountable side windows – all in good condition.
This ‘Thing’ attracts smiles wherever it goes and presents a fun alternative to the standard beach buggy or Mini Moke with far greater road presence and utilitarian vibe – it’s purposeful motoring that simply isn’t made anymore.
Sold with RWC, personalised plates GTA71 and balance of QLD registration (not including transfer fees – if sold in QLD).
