Model History
Born from BMW's desire to blend high-performance engineering with genuine touring refinement, the E24 6 Series was introduced in 1976 as the spiritual successor to the elegant CS Coupé.
The new 6 series was styled by Paul Braq and built on the E12 5 series sharing many suspension and driveline components. Initially the 633CSI and 630CS models were introduced and were later accompanied/replaced by the 628CSI and 635CSI (and its derivatives) line up. Later in 1982 the 6 series was given a facelift and mechanical/electrical underpinnings were updated with parts from the E28 5 series platform.
The 635CSI was introduced in 1978 originally with the M90 6-cylinder engine which was later updated to the M30B34 of 3430cc capacity with Bosch Motronic fuel injection making 215hp (euro spec) and 310nm of torque. Choice of transmission was either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic.
Handling was handled by MacPherson struts up front and a semi-trailing arm setup at the rear, tuned to strike that ideal balance between supple long-distance comfort and sharp, responsive handling while braking was by four-wheel disc brakes with servo assistance and ABS.
Behind the drivers seat was the place to be, with well setup ergonomics, very comfortable and supportive seats and a low waistline for great visibility over the long bonnet.
By the early 1980s the 635CSi had earned enormous respect both on road and track, campaigned with great success in European Touring Car competition, and by 1984 it sat at the very pinnacle of what a two-door grand tourer could be — sophisticated enough for a weekend in Monaco, and spirited enough to remind you why you fell in love with driving in the first place.
Vehicle History
This BMW 635csi presents in great condition for its age, painted in a superb ‘Achatgrün Metallic’ (dark green) with beige leather interior – a great colour combination for these BMW’s. The paint work is completely original as far as we can see with only a few minor stone chips at the front with no prior accident damage and no signs of rust. The interior is in equally original condition with no marks in the beige leather seats; carpets and headliner in very usable condition.
Imported in 1995 to Queensland (and fully complied), the 6 series has been well maintained by its previous owners with paperwork to support. Recently the BMW has been treated to a full suspension overhaul, reconditioned head including new cam sensor and engine mounts, reconditioned brake booster, new 18 inch BBS rims wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza performance tires. Central locking was also installed prior to the owner acquiring the car. This particular example drives very well with plenty of power under foot and sharp handling.
Now looking for a new home, this 635csi presents a great buy for those wanting to get into the definitive ‘shark nose’ BMW ownership.
Sold with RWC and balance of registration (if sold in QLD, excluding rego transfer fees).
