Audi TT RS
The new offering from the booming German prestige brand is the $133,700 TT RS quattro coupe and buyers can look forward to an all new five-cylinder direct injected and turbocharged engine that boasts peak power of 250kW and 450Nm of torque.
The 2.5-litre engine is mated with a six-speed manual transmission and Audi Australia boss Joerg Hofmann expects to sell around 80 cars a year. The TT RS can sprint to 100km/h in less than five seconds and make it to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h.
The car made its debut early in 2009 at the Geneva motor show and Audi has high hopes that the car will build on the success of the TTS that was launched here back in August 2008.
Hofmann says the RS models, while niche, are always popular for buyers wanting the ultimate in performance. "The TT RS offers superb, pure sports car styling with exceptional grunt. It is without doubt, - a very fun car to drive," he said.
"However, the appeal of the TT RS doesn't end there. The new generation TT is larger, longer and lighter than its predecessor, and even with its superb performance, the TT RS still manages to offer efficient driving and low CO2. These traits will certainly appeal to Australian buyers," Hofmann added.
As with all RS models, Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel drive system gives the car remarkable handling and it has a largely aluminium body constructed in line with the Audi Space Frame ASF principle.
The TT RS features special RS-design elements including a "diamond look" radiator grille, large side air inlets, brushed aluminium exterior mirrors, a fixed rear wing spoiler, a striking diffuser insert and oval tailpipes.
Australian specification vehicles' standard kit inventory includes 19-inch alloy wheels in five-arm rotor design, DVD-based navigation with glove box mounted CD changer, TT RS bucket seats trimmed in fine Nappa leather, sports suspension with Audi magnetic ride, a short shift, manual gearbox and hill start assist.
The second new Audi offering is the S5 cabriolet and instead of a 2.5-litre turbocharged "five", it is powered by a supercharged, three-litre direct injection V6 that gives the driver 245 kW of peak power and a handy 440Nm of torque that is on tap between 2900 and 5300rpm.
The $138,100 soft-top four-seater can sprint to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds and it also has a governed top speed of 250km/h. Audi claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.7-litres/ 100km. The S5 cabriolet's newly developed engine slips its super charger in the space between the two V banks of cylinders and fuel is injected into the combustion chambers at up to 0.8 bar.
Two downstream intercoolers reduce the temperature of the compressed intake air and the car comes standard with servotronic speed sensitive steering, a seven speed S tronic transmission and specially tuned S sports suspension.
Its 18-inch cast aluminium wheels are shod with 245/40 tyres and the black brake calipers carry S5 emblems. Styling features include modifications to the lower front and back panels, the front spoiler and the diffuser, the single frame grille, the air intakes, the sill trims and the four tailpipes.
Inside there are Alcantara covered electrically adjustable sport seats and brushed aluminium inlays and there is a standard colour driver information system as is Audi's intuitive MMI Navigation Plus system. There are aluminium look shift paddles and a centre armrest and the S5 logo is featured on the door sill trims, the key, the leather multi-function sports steering wheel and the instruments. Also standard are Xenon Plus headlights, LED daytime driving lights, advanced key access, electric heated front seats, cruise control, Audi Parking System Plus and an acoustic soft-top.
