BMW 4 Series convertible coming in March
Replacing the 3 Series soft top in the BMW range, the new 4 Series is larger in most dimensions than its predecessor (including a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear track), and features a three-piece retractable hardtop roof that opens/closes in 20 seconds, and features more noise absorbent headlining.
Changes to the steering and suspension have been made to enhance the droptop's agility and on-road performance over the out-going model. Exterior design reflects the more muscular and purposeful appearance of the coupe variant, which BMW says has been designed to highlight the vehicle's "sporty pedigree".
The new 4 Series will be available locally in three versions initially, with pricing ranging from $88,800 to $126,600 (MSLP, plus ORCs).
The entry model '420d' is powered by BMW's TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder diesel, producing 135kW and 380Nm. The 420d boasts a staggeringly low fuel consumption figure of 4.8lt/100km.
The mid-range ($97,500) 428i convertible features a petrol version of the TwinPower turbo four, which develops 180kW and 350Nm. 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 6.4 seconds and economy of 6.7lt/100 km is quoted for this model.
At the top of the range, the 435i convertible runs an inline six-cylinder TwinPower turbo, which pumps out 225kW and 400Nm of torque. Despite a very swift 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, fuel economy is frugal at just 7.7lt/100km.
All three 4 Series droptops will be fitted with BMW's eight-speed sport automatic transmission as standard, as well as a suite of BMW Efficient Dynamics technologies, including Auto Stop/Start, Brake Energy Regeneration, ECO PRO mode and on-demand ancillaries such as electric power steering.
Spec levels reflect that of the 4 Series coupes, but heated front seats and a wind deflector will be fitted as standard to all three variants.
Full specs, interior trim levels, exterior colour options and further details will be announced closer to the 4 Series convertible's local release date.
