BMW 4 Series coupe debuts
Described by BMW as "the very essence of aesthetic appeal and dynamics in the premium segment," the new 4 Series uses 3 Series sedan, wagon and convertible running gear, and carries signature BMW styling cues, like the twin kidney grille, to tie it to the rest of the BMW family, and show its lineage from the 3 Series.
Larger in width and wheelbase than the outgoing BMW 3 Series coupe, the 4 Series sits considerably lower to the road (BMW claim a perfect 50-50 front-rear weight distribution), with short front and rear overhangs.
Carryover styling features from the 3 Series include twin circular headlights and a large front air intake spoiler.
There are hints of 6 Series and even older 8 Series coupes in the new 4 Series design, particularly when viewed from the rear, but BMW say the new model is a stand-alone creation, styled largely on the 'Concept 4 Series Coupe' that made its debut in the US earlier this year.
Some of the concept's design elements, like the large front air intake spoiler, have been carried over - with some alterations - to the production model, but others, like the rear valance opening, haven't.
New design elements include what BMW call "Air Breathers". Positioned aft of the front wheel arches to reduce drag, they combine with muscular wheel arches front and rear and a distinctive doorline crease.
Powerplants include a 2.0-litre four cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder, with a diesel also expected to be available when the range goes on sale in Europe shortly. Australian release is expected in the last quarter of 2013, but options, specs and pricing are yet to be confirmed.
