BMW unveil 'M4' concept
Part of the ongoing replacement of the 3 Series in BMW's product lineup, the M4 is expected to become a production reality sooner rather than later.
According to Dr. Freidrich Nitschke, Chairmain of the Managing Board of BMW's M division, "the BMW Concept M4 Coupe reflects the BMW M philosophy in ideal form: It combines motor racing genes and unrestricted everyday suitability in a highly emotional overall concept."
Finished exclusive "Aurum Dust" gold paint, the Concept M4 Coupe has the same overall shape and dimensions as the 4 Series coupe unveiled in June, but is identified by different treatments to the front and rear end, as well as unique side gills and wheels.
Large lower front air inlets and a distinctive, low rear end identify the M4 Concept, with carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) used for the front splitter, roof and rear diffuser.
LED headlights "link" to the traditional BMW double kidney grille, the bars of which are designed to evoke the double-spoke appearance of the M4 Concept's wheels.
The bonnet features a subtle 'power dome' bulge, while the lower valance features sharply outlined vertical air vents located in the outer section of the side air intakes, part of BMW's 'Air Curtain' aerodynamic system.
From the side, M-badged gills form the start of distinctive bodyside creases that run in line with the door handles and gently fade toward the tail lights. The functional gills are part of BMW's 'Air Breather' design, which in conjunction with the Air Curtain, improve airflow and ventilation, while also reducing fuel consumption.
The contoured CFRP roof reduces weight and features the BMW M tri-colour stripe. At the back, a rear spoiler is integrated into the boot lid, but the carbon fibre rear diffuser and quad exhaust tips arguably command more attention.
Bi-coloured 20-inch M light alloys are exclusive to the Concept M4 Coupe, but feature the typical M double spoke design and cover M-spec Carbon ceramic brakes.
While still described as a concept, the "realistic" design of the M4 Coupe makes a production version highly likely, with some sources tipping an on-sale date as early as next year, with a convertible M4 expected to follow soon after.
