Chop-top Falcon to be auctioned in Melbourne
Of course, the Aussie-made Falcon was never offered as a convertible from the factory, but that hasn't stopped a number of professional and amateur conversions to open air cruisers over the years, particularly the popular XM and XP two-doors.
This particular example is described as being based on a 1964 model XP Futura two-door hardtop, the premium Falcon of the time. However, the XP wasn't released until 1965, so one suspects the provided date information is incorrect.
The XP was professionally converted in 1988 by Elliot Engineering of Bayswater, Victoria. The drop-top conversion is described as being fully-engineered and finished with a hood made using quality Mercedes-Benz canvas.
At the time of its conversion, the Falcon was also repainted in its original factory metallic blue, but otherwise left in stock condition.
Notable factory features on the vehicle include power-assisted front disc brakes, a 170ci Super Pursuit six-cylinder engine with three-speed manual transmission, an original factory radio, heater and bucket seats.
Used sparingly since the conversion, the 35,358 miles on the odometer is believed to be correct. Given its unique status and condition, Shannons expect the drop-top Falcon Futura to sell in the $26,000-$32,000 range.
Another interesting lot for Ford fans at December's auction is a nicely modified LHD 1951 Ford F1 pickup with a number of custom touches.
Re-painted last year in BMW 'Sepang Bronze' metallic, this first generation F-Series pickup runs a 327ci Chev small block V8 with World Sportsman 2 heads under the bonnet, and also comes with a four-speed Muncie gearbox and 4:88 Ford 9-inch differential.
An extensive receipt file of all mechanical work is included, with the vendor stating that the Ford has travelled around 10,000 trouble-free miles since completion of the mechanical conversion and repaint.
Originally carrying full NSW registration, the '51 F1 has recently been on Victorian Club plates, making it a useable classic. Shannons have set a guiding range of $30,000-$34,000 for this tastefully-modified pickup.
Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction takes place on Monday, December 2, at Shannons' Melbourne auction rooms, 321 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham. For more information on these and other lots from the auction, go to: www.shannons.com.au
