Apex Falcon
While the Aussie Ford Falcon’s GT pedigree started with the XR series of 1967, it peaked with the XY series of 1970-72. In the XY Falcon GT, a potent 351ci V8 produced 224kW and made its presence known with the ‘shaker’ scoop poking through the bonnet. GT-HO homologation specials ramped that up to as much as 291kW, adding other goodies intended to conquer Bathurst.
Were the XA and XB GTs that followed as good as the XY? Some think so, but desirability and pricing today says otherwise - the XY is at the top of the mountain of Aussie muscle collectability.
Authentic . . .
A genuine (JG33 code), matching numbers example, this 1970 XY Falcon GT was a 1-of-1 spec car when new and has been fully restored. Outside, fresh Monza Green paint and reproduction GT graphics and badges are complemented by racing mirrors, authentic 14-inch five-slot wheels and red stripe tyres.
Inside, there’s factory-style Light Saddle vinyl trim, black carpets, a GT steering wheel and full instrumentation, with the bonus of a rare factory Golde wind-back sunroof and Super Fringe Deluxe radio.
A three-speed automatic and power steering ensures driving ease, with power front disc brakes to rein in the ponies when needed.
. . . with a Twist
Under the bonnet is where this green goddess has a little surprise. The matching numbers 351 remains, but has been stroked to 393ci, adding Comp Cams roller rockers, a Holley 750 Ultra HP carby and 4-into-1 headers on a custom dual exhaust system. All the enhancements are bolt-on, so purists can easily return the mill to factory spec.
