Ford presents MY20 GT
With key improvements by Ford Performance including upgraded engine cooling and more horsepower from the 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. A new exterior finish and update on the classic Gulf Racing livery have also been introduced for 2020.
“Ford GT continues to be the pinnacle of Ford performance,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer.
“GT is always the ultimate expression of Ford racing innovation, and that means constantly raising our game for our customers as well as earning the checkered flag.”
Revised calibration of the EcoBoost V6 has delivered an extra 13 horsepower (9.7kW) to increase maximum power to 660hp (492kW), with a broader torque curve, too.
The gallery-cooled pistons and high-energy ignition coils from the track-only GT MkII have been fitted and new buttress air ducts added that increase air flow by 50 per cent for enhanced engine cooling, while larger intercoolers keep charge air temperatures cooler.
A titanium Akrapovic exhaust system is now standard, offering reduced weight and a deeper, more aggressive note compared to the previous factory exhaust.
Suspension damping has been stiffened in track mode, with a view to enhanced handling and body control on race circuits.
A new interpretation of the Gulf Racing Heritage livery for 2020 adds black pinstriping between the signature Gulf colours of orange and blue, while the optional race number is now a ‘6’ – inspired by the number of the Le Mans race winner from 1968 and ’69. Carbon fibre wheels are also available with this colour scheme for the first time.
The new exterior finish for 2020 is ‘Liquid Carbon’ - essentially the carbon fibre body devoid of paint but protected with a clearcoat finish. Optional to this are over-the-top single or dual racing stripes and painted mirror caps.
“This next chapter in the Ford GT story allows us to fully demonstrate our mastery in both the art and science of carbon fibre craftsmanship and finishing,” said Angus Smith, General Manager of Multimatic Niche Vehicles, North America.
“The results of this ongoing partnership between Multimatic and Ford Performance speak for themselves, as each Liquid Carbon GT is a manufacturing marvel, showcasing the characteristics and nuances inherent in carbon fibre composites.”
Carbon fibre wheels are standard equipment on the GT in Liquid Carbon, with options including titanium wheelnuts, five different brake caliper colour choices, six-point anchors for the racing seats and five different interior finishes.
As with previous iterations of the GT, the 2020 version will not be released in Australia
