Mustang R-Spec finishes production
“Enthusiasts who are looking for the ultimate Mustang Fastback should look no further than the supercharged R-Spec,” said Kay Hart, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand. “We’re proud of all the work that’s gone into bringing this genuinely local Mustang to enthusiasts. Ford and Herrod Performance have together responded to a passionate customer base, who were looking for a range-topping, individually numbered model that has a unique place in Mustang history.”
Developed by Ford in partnership with Herrod Performance (who actually do the modification work, using some of Ford’s former manufacturing facilities at Broadmeadows), the R-Spec is the first – and so far only - supercharged Mustang to be offered by Ford locally. Based on the GT fastback, the R-Spec is defined by a Roush Stage 3 roots-type blower that pushes the 5.0 V8’s performance from 339kW/556Nm in GT form, up to an estimated 522kW/827Nm.
Matched exclusively to a 5-speed manual transmission, this upgraded engine is supplemented with an upgraded intercooler and radiator, plus a model-specific exhaust from Herrod Performance.
There’s also lower, stiffer springs and recalibrated MagneRide adaptive suspension, adjustable stabiliser bars, wider wheels front and rear, plus a larger front air intake, new rear spoiler and a selection of cosmetic touches.
Those extras and upgrades come at a cost, though, with the Mustang R-Spec carrying a starting price of $99,980 plus on-roads.
The coronavirus outbreak led to production being halted earlier this year – as Ford Australia and their partners shifted to the production of face shields – but recently got underway again.
“With the final batch of Mustang R-Specs soon to reach dealers, we want to thank our loyal customers who waited patiently for their vehicles to arrive and are now able to enjoy them on the open road,” said Rob Herrod, Director of Herrod Performance.
“The enthusiasm for this special car, and the passion put into the entire project, is a testament to the Mustang fan-base in Australia.”
While the entire 500-unit allocation of the Mustang R-Spec was secured by dealers after its launch back in January, not every vehicle went immediately to a customer. Ford advised on 25 June that a “small number” of units were still available at dealerships.
