Donington Auctions enjoyed a successful outcome for their September Classic & Collector Car Auction. More than 60 lots, located across Sydney and Melbourne, were on offer, covering blue chip classics, racing specials and competition cars, projects, pickups and late-model performance cars.
Conducted from 31 August to 13 September, the online auction saw a clearance rate of 90 per cent, with the top seller being a 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB. An early example, with the ‘Vetroresina’ (fibreglass) body and dry sump 2.9-litre V8, this car had been delivered new to Hong Kong before coming to Australia in 1983, remaining with the same family since.
Originally red with a beige interior, a respray in silver and new burgundy leather trim was completed in 2015. The odometer reading of 37,786 miles at time of listing included just 12,000 in the past 34 years. It sold for $154,000.
Next best was a 2005 Bentley Arnage ‘Blue Train’ saloon; one of just 30 built and the only example thought to be in Australia. Defined by model-specific bumpers, chrome exterior trim and 19-inch wheels outside, the Blue Train also featured chrome and timber accents inside, black gauge faces and a sunroof.
Delivered new to Australia, this Bentley spent its first decade in Queensland, before going to NSW with the vendor in 2015. Offered with extensive paperwork, this car sold for $85,000.
Also performing well was a 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T convertible. With the ‘double loop’ front bumper that was only offered for the 1970 model year, this rare B-body was factory fitted with a 440 V8 and Torqueflite three-speed automatic.
Purchased at a US auction in 2012, then moving from Victoria to NSW in 2018, this Coronet had been shown at Chryslers on the Murray and car shows in Sydney. The best-selling American car in the auction, this rare muscle Mopar sold for $74,000.
Other notable results included $62,000 for a 2003 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning pickup, $55,000 for a 1955 Bristol 405 saloon, $50,000 for a supercharged C1948 MG TC, and $23,800 for a 1913 Ford Model T tourer.
