Supercars’ Team Sydney unveiled with Coca Cola branding
Decked out in Coca-Cola livery reminiscent of the Wayne Gardner Racing Commodores of the 1990s (and with history in Australian racing dating back to the Allan Moffat Mustang from 1969), the Team Sydney ZB Commodore is one of two from the Sydney squad that will run this season.
Both cars are Triple Eight-built customer Commodores, with James Courtney the team’s lead driver, announcing his mover from Walkinshaw Andretti United in October, while the second driver is likely to be New Zealander Chris Pither.
The livery on the Team Sydney car at the series launch suggests Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) are a primary sponsor of Team Sydney, but this is yet to be confirmed, with Team Sydney themselves only saying that CCA are a team partner. As such, the “total coverage” Coca-Cola livery may not feature on Courtney’s actual racecar this season. Similarly, what sort of livery the second Team Sydney Commodore will wear is also unconfirmed. More details are expected shortly from Team Sydney.
Team Sydney may be a new name, but it’s essentially a rebranding of Tekno Autosports. The Jonathon Webb-run outfit are relocating from their existing base on the Gold Coast to a temporary facility within Sydney Motorsport Park, then a permanent base within SMSP later this year.
Webb will remain as Team Principal and relocate to Sydney, with a handful of current Tekno team members expected to also make the transition, but Webb stated at the season launch he was looking for Sydney-based personnel to fill a number of roles.
Established in 2011, Tekno’s highlights include winning the 2016 Bathurst 1000, but success has been elusive more recently, with 2019 team driver Jack Le Brocq failing to achieve a single top-ten finish.
The funding from CCA and other partners has not only facilitated the Sydney move, but also allowed the team to expand for two cars for 2020. Webb drove the endurance rounds with Le Brocq last year, but has yet to confirm any driving duties for the 2020 season.
