XB GT set for Melbourne auction
One of less than a thousand GT hardtops built during the XB's lifespan, the auction vehicle is fitted with a 351 V8 and 3-speed auto. The Polar White XB GT has been with the same owner since 1977, and is fitted with a vinyl top and sunroof.
The vendor treated it to a restoration five years ago, with bodywork done by Sid Lewis, while the engine (not factory-correct), was rebuilt by Peter Macrow.
The GT has also been fitted with "luxury" features like electric windows, air conditioning and power steering, although how many of these are factory-fitted is unknown. A set of Bathurst Globe mags are also fitted, with wider units on the rear, although original size rims will be included with the sale.
The XB GT reportedly spent much of its life as a family car, had been fitted with a towbar, and has travelled across the country on family holidays. Despite the relatively recent resto, the pre-purchase inspection report has indicated minor rust in the rear wheel arches and sills, as well as the boot lid.
With the "return" of GT production to Ford's Broadmeadows assembly plant, there's been some renewed interest of late in the classic Aussie muscle cars to wear the GT badge. Whether this will translate into a good price for the XB GT being auctioned is too early to tell. Shannons have set a guiding range for this particular vehicle at $42,000 - $48,000.
The sale will include a workshop repair manual, new repro roof lining, photo file of the restoration work and the personalised (Vic reg) plates 'XBGT-74'.
Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic Auction will take place at Shannons Melbourne auction house, 321 Warrigal Road, Cheltenham, on Monday, April 29, from 7:00PM. For further details, go to www.shannons.com.au.
