(To be sold Unregistered & with Vic RWC)
RARE FACTORY AUTOMATIC CGT – ONE OF ONLY 764!
Conceived as a replacement for the Austin Healey 3000, designed around the proven body and chassis of the MG B, to be fitted with a BMC C-Series 6 cylinder engine for extra performance, the new model was to be sold under both the MG and Austin Healey nameplates. As development went along, plans where changed slightly, after the BMC 3 Litre 6 cylinder was found to be too tall for the MG bodywork. Alec Issigonis was tasked to redesign the C-Series, resulting in an engine, of the same capacity (2912cc), with 7 main bearings, 1 ¾” shorter in height, and weighing 44lbs less than that used in the Austin Healey 3000.
Production ran from 1967 until 1969, in which time a total of 8,999 MGCs were built, split between 4,542 Roadsters and 4,457 GTs, with the latter's hatchback offering many advantages including: reduced road noise, a weatherproof cabin, a much larger amount of usable storage room, rear seats and most importantly a lockable and secure cabin.
This rare MGC was originally delivered to the US Market, and is one of only 764 GTs fitted with a factory Automatic transmission. Subsequently imported into Australia, converted to right hand drive, engineered and issued with a QLD Modification Plate in January 2001.
The GT’s Pinifarina styled bodywork (without an aftermarket sunroof), finished in Black is complemented by tinted windows & brightwork including spline drive alloy wheels with two eared knock-ons. The MGC has been trimmed in contrasting Red leather and features a period wood-rim steering wheel and recoil front seat belts.
The performance increase of 53% more horse power, and 55% more torque relative to the MG B's 1798cc engine is instantly evident, with the strength to pull out of corners under acceleration with far fewer revs. This C has only travelled ~1,500 miles since an engine re-build in 2011 and is supported by Pertronix electronic ignition and a rear telescopic shock absorber conversion.
