BMW takes full control of Alpina
After more than six decades as a standalone firm, Alpina is now officially part of the BMW Group. Although BMW had purchased the business back in 2022, Alpina was allowed to retain its independence in a deal that expired at the end of 2025. As such, on 1 January, 2026, 61 years to the day after Alpina was established, all rights to the brand were officially transferred to BMW.

Founded as a multifaceted business, Alpina soon gained attention for their tuning work on BMWs. The fact that these modifications, on cylinder heads and induction initially, retained BMW’s factory warranty gave Alpina additional credibility.
Alpina-tuned BMWs would prove successful in motorsport before the move to manufacturing commenced in 1983. As per AMG’s relationship with Mercedes-Benz, Alpina cars would be based on production BMWs, but with enhanced suspension, braking, engine performance and aerodynamics. Where Alpina differed from BMW’s own M brand, is that they were usually more luxuriously appointed and less raw than some M models.

The new iteration of Alpina, to be known officially as ‘BMW Alpina’ moving forward, will continue this tradition, striking what BMW calls a “balance between superior ride comfort and maximum performance.” Additionally, BMW Alpina will introduce “an exclusive portfolio of bespoke options and custom materials, along with unmistakable details.”
What’s described as a “remarkable” portfolio of available options will potentially make each BMW Alpina unique, but these won’t be at the expense of performance or comfort.
BMW says they are aware of the legacy of Alpina and the responsibility they have in introducing this next chapter. They add that the new the new BMW Alpina will meet the highest expectations, with future vehicles manufactured to rigorous standards for materials selection and craftsmanship.

The logo for BMW Alpina is inspired by that which graced Alpina cars in the 1970s. Described as an elegant, contemporary design that provides a link between history and future, this will feature prominently at the rear of future vehicles. Design for these vehicles will be the responsibility of Max Missoni, who was recruited from Polestar in 2024.
